Memories Of A Barbeque Disaster

from:

Looking back on a barbeque day that I hosted, I can't help but think that things didn't go as well as planned. Recalling my own failures may help you to avoid making the same mistakes.

Asking a few friends to join us seemed like a great idea. The forecast was great for the whole weekend and there's nothing better than eating food outdoors. Since I'd be the one doing the cooking, it was also going to give me a chance to show off my BBQ skills.

On the morning of the actual day I visited the supermarket to pick up the essentials. As far as I was concerned, this largely meant beer, wine, sausages, burgers and some bread rolls. I also picked up a little bit of salad.

My intention was to produce hot dogs, plus burgers in buns. With the addition of a few salad leaves and a bit of tomato sauce, these would ensure a great day.

Once people arrived, we all soon started drinking and chatting. I popped some of the burgers and sausages onto the BBQ and then continued talking, occasionally remembering to turn them over. Although I soon realised to purchase any soft drinks, all seemed to be going well.

At this point a vegetarian friend asked what there was to eat. It was then that it hit me! I realised that I'd assumed that everyone would be a meat eater.

A foolish assumption and one that could have been avoided if I'd only thought about things earlier in the day. In a slight state of panic at having a guest left hungry, I neglected the food that was already cooking.

Before I knew it, I had some very burnt sausages and burgers for everyone else. Fortunately, my friends were very understanding about the whole situation.

Despite this, it was clear to me that my approach had been far too casual. Some would undoubtedly describe it as having been pretty thoughtless.

Avoid making the same mistakes I did by ensuring that you put plenty of effort into the preparations. There's no doubt in my mind that doing so is vital to hosting a successful event.
